How to Glaze a Window
To ensure your windows are properly sealed to prevent your home from unwanted water or air, glazing should be replaced from time to time. Although glazing takes some time and skill, you can still glaze your windows by yourself; use the below guidelines.
Ensure you have all you need. You need to ensure you have all the supplies you will need to glaze your window. The items that are necessary for glazing a window include a putty knife, clean rags, putty, paint, sandpaper, paintbrushes, adhesive tape, and more. There are high chances that most of the items are in your garage or house but if they are not, you can buy them from nearby hardware.
Ensure you get rid of the old putty as well as glass. You should put a newspaper on both sides of the pane. Secondly, use a hammer to destroy the glass then pull it out of the pane. Next, loosen up the putty using the putty knife. If the putty cannot come out while using a knife, melt it with a blow torch. Disconnect the metal fasteners from the frames.
Ensure you make the wood smooth. Use the sandpaper to smooth the wood. After smoothening it sufficiently, treat the wood using the oil-based primer then seal it off. It is important o apply primer because it hinders oil absorption that can result in cracks on the glazing after a short time, meaning more drafts. The primer should be given 24 hours to dry.
Knead the putty. After you have kneaded the putty until soft, use your fingers to put it along the inner side of the window panes. Using the putty knife, press it as tight as you can. After putting the putty, fix the new glass.
Ensure you apply new glazing. At the window panes center, place glazier points and use the putty knife to press the point in its place. Make sure glazier points are put on every side of the window pane then put new glazing around the window frame. Put pressure so that the glazing can hold the glass pane securely. Ensure you remove the excess putty.
You should let the glazing dry and paint it. Allow the glazing to dry for about 10 days. You may be irritated with fingerprints being on the glass but do not clean it until it is dry. You should clean up the window using the oil-based primer as well as the paint while making sure it aligns with your houses other windows.
